Building a Seniors Campus: A sustainable model to support
positive aging and strengthen our communities

Jane Sinclair, RN, BScN, MN
General Manager, Health and Emergency Services

The County of Simcoe (County) is a rapidly growing municipality, investing in innovative strategies to foster positive aging and create more sustainable and healthy communities. The County’s vision for a state-of-the-art, “60+” adult lifestyle community
offering an entire continuum of housing and services combined with a unique opportunity to age in place, became a reality when the Georgian Village campus opened its doors to its residents in 2013 in the Town of Penetanguishene, Ontario. This advanced “age-in-place model” is the future of housing for older adults that provides efficient, comprehensive and accessible services and amenities within a safe and welcoming community environment.

Simcoe County Positive Aging Strategy: Older Adults Strengthening our Communities

Let’s build an Age-friendly Simcoe County together by valuing and supporting older adults in our communities, and, at the same time, celebrating diversity, refuting ageism and reducing inequities by recognizing their contributions to our region.

The County of Simcoe takes great pride in the four Long Term Care Homes it owns and operates.

Accredited With Exemplary Standing Badge

Our mission is "to provide effective, high quality, safe and efficient long term care services in a home-like setting for the clients and families that we serve".  Each of the Four County of Simcoe Homes is accredited by Accreditation Canada.

The standards for this accreditation cover the physical environment of the facility to ensure that it is safe, appropriate for the delivery of care and conducive to the well being of the residents and staff, as well as the systems and structures related to the delivery of health care.

The services provided to the residents at each of the four County of Simcoe Homes are similar. Entertainment includes bus trips, crafts, bingo games, music and sing-songs, pub nights and happy hours. Exercise classes and discussion groups help to keep body and mind sharp. Pet therapy, when trained pets visit, is one of the most popular activities. Spiritual programs take many forms and, at Georgian Manor, many programs are offered in French. Resident Councils are in effect the Manor community government. The members elected are the link between the residents and the administration ensuring a pleasant and efficient operation.

Each of the Homes have terrific Volunteer programs. For more information visit our Volunteer Programs page.

Two of the Manors have developed supportive living programs. In Beeton, Simcoe Village provides support on an as-needed basis to seniors in independent living apartments. In Collingwood, the Sunset Village complex is based on the Life Lease model where seniors purchase a lease on a suite which they can sell later if they need to move. Both Villages are designed to be barrier-free and offer access to many programs and services in the adjacent Manors.

The Georgian Village in Penetanguishene is an Adult Lifestyle Community offering a choice of housing and care options. The Georgian Village has something for everyone, from Market Value Life Lease Garden Homes and Apartment Suites to Assisted Living Apartments, Affordable Housing Apartments and Long Term Care facilities.

2016 Accreditation

County of Simcoe Long Term Care Homes Accredited with Exemplary Standing

The County of Simcoe, Long Term Care and Seniors Services Department is committed to continually improving our services.  That's why we voluntarily participate in accreditation with Accreditation Canada - to learn what we're doing well and where we can improve.

By having external surveyors assess our services against national standards, we are better able to focus our quality improvement efforts.

Everyone in the Long Term Care and Seniors Services Department is involved in accreditation, from front-line staff, volunteers and community partners, to residents and families.  That's because we are all committed to quality and resident safety.

Click on the Presentation "Working Together Accreditation 2016" for more information about Accreditation.
