What is Household Hazardous Waste?What is Household Hazardous Waste?<p>​Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) is found in every home and includes batteries, cleaners, paints, motor oil, chemicals, grease, CFLs, and fluorescent tubes.</p><p>HHW products if not disposed of properly can be harmful to people, animals and the environment. HHW must not be included in your curbside garbage, recycling bin or down the drain.<span></span></p><p>Knowing which products are hazardous can help you protect yourself and others. Disposing of Household Hazardous Waste GuideDisposing of Household Hazardous Waste Guide<h4>For safe and easy transport</h4><p>When preparing your household hazardous waste for safe and easy transport, please keep in mind the following:</p><ul><li>All materials should be left in the original container<img class="ms-rtePosition-2" alt="Picture of household hazardous waste" src="/SolidWasteManagement/PublishingImages/HHWOro3.jpg" style="margin:10px 5px;" /> for easy identification</li><li>Do not mix products together</li><li>Wastes should be sealed and labelled</li><li>Collect household batteries in a small bag, plastic container or coffee can. If you have 9-Volt batteries please cover the terminals with electrical tape prior to storage and store them in a cool, dry location and away from flammable material</li><li>Needles must be placed in a biohazard container before disposal at one of the County HHW locations. Biohazard containers can be picked up at all HHW depots prior to drop-off</li><li>Medications, prescription drugs and medical sharps are now accepted at your local pharmacy. For more information or to find your local drop-off location, please visit <a href="http://healthsteward.ca/">www.healthsteward.ca </a></li><li>Gas cans cannot be returned</li></ul><h4>Drop-off Procedure</h4><ul><li>Upon arrival to the waste management facility, proceed to the scale house and advice the clerk you have HHW material, please remain in your vehicle at all times</li><li> Follow the signs to the HHW depot and drive to the HHW unloading area</li><li> Walk your material to collection table and wait for assistance, you must check-in with the attendant for them to receive the materials</li><li>Please sign the HHW material sheet and drive back to the scale house if you have not already checked out</li><li>For commercial household hazardous waste different <a title="HHW disposal" href="/SolidWasteManagement/Pages/hazardous.aspx">rules apply</a></li></ul>

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) can only be dropped off at the following County of Simcoe waste management facilities:

Disclaimer:

The County of Simcoe reserves the right to limit items and quantities. Materials must be delivered in containers that can be left behind. If products are not in their original container, please label to identify the material type.

Commercial Hazardous Waste

The Oro Landfill HHW facility is licensed to accept materials from Small Quantity Generators (SQG) that meet the specified criteria outlined by the MOE. SQG's are commercial or institutional establishments that generate less than 100 kg of MHSW in a month.

The waste generated by a SQG must be registered through HWIN of the Registration Report. To qualify as an SQG the amount of all hazardous materials must be less than 100 kg in a month.

The MHSW cannot be bulked prior to bringing to the facility and no individual containers can weigh more than 250 kg. SQG waste must be shipped in sealed container. A certificate label must be affixed to the containers SQG must be transported by an approved MHSW system, the container must not be broken or leaking.
