Paramedic 2020 Recruitment

The County of Simcoe Paramedic Service is now accepting employment applications for part-time positions as Primary Care Paramedics and Advanced Care Paramedics.

​The recruitment consists of two streams. Stream one, for those certified by an Ontario Base Hospital and stream two for those that are either AEMCA-Pending or not currently certified by on Ontario Base Hospital.  Please review the information below to determine the steps required for each particular stream.  Candidates will move on in the recruitment process based on successful completion of each of the phases with consideration of the number of spots available in each phase.

Stream 1 – Paramedics Currently Certified by an Ontario Base Hospital

Recruitment Phases:

  1. On the County of Simcoe website, apply for the job posting seeking Paramedics currently certified by an Ontario Base Hospital  - Now Open
  2. Physical Testing (see details below) - February 24 - March 13 (one appointment required)
  3. Skills Testing - March 30,31 April 1,2,3 (one time slot required)
  4. Multi-mini Interviews - April 6,7,8,9 (one time slot required)
  5. Documentation Collection - March 24 & during skills assessments
  6. Base Hospital Orientation - April 28
  7. Base Hospital Cross Certification - Notification if any additional education is required
  8. Service Orientation - May 8, 11-15, 18-22 (all days required)

​Stream 2 – Paramedics NOT Currently Certified by an Ontario Base Hospital / AEMCA Pending (including ACPs that have not completed ACP certification with an Ontario Base Hospital)

​Recruitment Phases:

  1. ​On the County of Simcoe website, apply for the job posting seeking Paramedics not currently certified by an Ontario Base Hospital / AEMCA pending (this includes ACP's that have not completed an ACP certification with an Ontario Base Hospital - Now Open
  2. Written Exam (see details below) - February 18 (one time slot required)
  3. Physical Testing (see details below) - February 24 - March 13 (one appointment required)
  4. Skills Testing - March 30,31 April 1,2,3 (one time slot required)
  5. Multi-mini Interviews - April 6,7,8,9 (one time slot required)
  6. Documentation Collection - March 24 & during skills assessments
  7. Base Hospital Orientation - April 28
  8. Base Hospital OSCE (certification testing) - April 29 or 30 (one day required)
  9. Service Orientation - May 8, 11-15, 18-22 (all days required)

Applications will be accepted from AEMCA pending candidates who will have graduated from a Paramedic Program by the end of April 2020, and who will be writing the AEMCA exam during the spring/summer of 2020 offering.

Written Test:

Those candidates in stream 2 (not currently certified by an Ontario Base Hospital) selected to participate in the initial phase of the recruitment process will be required to attend a written exam on February 18th.  The exam will consist of multiple choice questions and will focus on the following areas: critical thinking, decision making, medical-legal, pharmacology, pathophysiology, EKGs, provincial symptom relief medical directives, and will include written scenarios.  Candidates must attain 70% or higher on the written exam to be eligible to attend the next phases of the recruitment process. 

Physical Testing:

The successful completion of a Paramedic Physical Assessment (PPA) will be required as a condition of employment with the County of Simcoe.  This testing is conducted by a third party organization on behalf of the County of Simcoe Paramedic Services.  This is a pass/fail component.  You may begin booking PPAs as soon as you have been notified by email of your success in moving onto the next recruitment phase following the written testing (if required).  This notification and the information on how and where to book your PPA will come from the County of Simcoe Human Resources Department by email February 11-20.  Physical testing will be open from February 24 - March 13, and test slots will be done through an online booking system only.  There will be a fee of $125.00 plus applicable taxes at the time of booking. 

  • If you were previously unsuccessful in the PPA, you may only book your PPA three months after your last test date.  
  • A successful result is valid for six months from the test date and must be current as of March 16, 2020,

During your PPA, you will be asked to perform a variety of movements and tasks including:

  • Functional Movement Testing
  • Base Strength and Balance Testing
    • Grip strength
    • Balance
    • Push-ups (age/gender specific)
    • Bent arm hang
  • ​Performance Based Testing: Completion of a series of lifts and carries specific to paramedic requirements
    • ​Deficit barbell deadlift of 52kg (115lbs)
    • Prowler sled push-pull 68kg (150 lbs) 40 feet
    • Farmer lift and carry, 20kg (44lb) in each hand and walk 32 feet navigating around cones
    • Suitcase lift and carry, 20kg weight 32ft navigating around cones, done on both right and left sides
    • Sand bag lift to height, 20kg bag lifted to 30inch platform, 12kg bag lifted to 48 inch platform

You will have 45 minutes to complete your PPA.

​**Candidates are eligible for consideration to attend the skills and MMI portion of the recruitment process, IF they have applied to the correct job posting, and successfully completed the PPA, and written exam (where applicable).**
