Living with Your Carts

Storing Your Carts

The storage, care and use of the carts is the responsibility of the resident. Carts add vertical storage space, so that they take up the same or less floor  space compared to an equivalent volume of waste in various bins, boxes and bags.

Helpful tips:

Store carts where you normally store your waste; if you don't have a garage or don't have space there, you can store carts in a convenient and secure place such as:

  • outdoors against your house, garage or fence

  • inside your garage or shed

  • for those with a long driveway, consider leaving carts closer to the end and wheeling to the curb on collection day

Remember:

  • The lids and the locking system on the organics cart will protect against inclement weather conditions and animals.
  • Rural communities across Ontario, including Timmins, Sault Ste. Marie, and Southgate Township are already utilizing carts successfully.

How to re-purpose your old recycling boxes, green bins and garbage cans:
  • Keep your old bins handy for occasional *overflow materials that do not fit into your cart on collection day.
  • Residents with long driveways may choose to leave their carts at the end (off to the side until collection day) and use their old bins to bring material from their homes to their carts
  • Use old recycling boxes of garbage cans (with lid removed) for yard waste and garden trimmings
  • Use to store waste before consolidating into your cart
  • Moving/storing construction material, firewood, etc.
  • Recycling boxes can be used for garage organization
  • Green bins work great to store pet food, bird seed, sand or sidewalk salt
  • Garbage cans can be used to store rakes, shovels or hockey sticks

*Overflow garbage must have a garbage tag affixed.
