The New Rental Development Program was developed to lead to the creation of affordable rental housing units.
The County is currently offering a development charge rebate financial incentive to support the creation of affordable housing. The County Development Charges Rebate for Affordable Housing is available for rental development, to eligible applicants, on a first-come first-served basis. The County of Simcoe has allocated $200,000 in the 2021 budget to offset county development charges paid by developers of affordable housing.
These funds are available to affordable housing development in the County of Simcoe's sixteen member municipalities. Subject to Council approval, the recipient shall provide affordable rental housing in the form of rental development. For further information, contact the Social Housing department at (705) 725-7215 Ext. 1119 or e-mail your request to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Affordable housing units created recently using Federal and Provincial funding have also been developed in partnership with private and non-profit developments. View the full list here for a list of projects developed to date, supported by Federal and Provincial affordable housing funding and/or by County funding. To live in any of these properties, applications must be made directly to the property owner(s) or associated property manager(s).
There are currently no opportunities for Federal and Provincial funding for the creation of purpose-built affordable rental units at this time.
Rental development in form of secondary units significantly contribute to the creation of affordable housing. The County of Simcoe's Secondary Suites Program offers up to $30,000 to eligible applicants toward the creation of a secondary/garden suite. For additional information about rental development of secondary/garden suites, please refer to the Secondary Suites Program site.
