About the Library Co-operative

County Buildings, Barrie cira 1959The County Library Co-operative's roots go back over sixty years.

The County of Simcoe Library Association was created in 1940 as a result of a meeting of representatives of the libraries in Simcoe County in March, 1939 at the Barrie Public Library.

The County Library Association originally operated out of the Barrie Public Library with the Barrie Librarian, Miss Lila McPhee, as its only staff member.
In 1947, the Association became the County of Simcoe Library Co-operative.
In 1954, the County Library was given space in the new County Court House in Barrie, and in 1973 it moved into the new County Administration Centre in Midhurst.

The mandate of the County Co-operative has changed over the years; however, the County Library Co-operative continues to support and enhance the services of public libraries throughout the County.

The Simcoe County Library Co-operative is a unique organization in the Province of Ontario. It is the only library co-operative in the province and it is officially recognized under the Public Libraries Act. The majority of funding comes from the County of Simcoe, although the Library also receives a modest annual operating grant from the Ministry of Culture.
Membership in the Co-operative is restricted to public library boards in the County of Simcoe, with the exception of the separated cities of Barrie and Orillia. All municipalities in the County contribute to the support of the County Library Co-operative through the general County levy; therefore, all municipal public libraries in Simcoe County are eligible to use the services of the Co-operative. Currently, there are fourteen separate library boards comprising twenty-eight libraries and branches in Simcoe County. Participation in any program or service of the Co-operative is strictly voluntary.

The Simcoe County Library Co-operative compiles and submits an Annual Report to County Council every year.  The Annual Report provides statistical and descriptive information outlining the activities and services provided by the Co-operative to its member libraries.

The Simcoe County Library Co-operative is open Monday to Friday (excluding holidays) from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm. Inquiries can be made by calling the Simcoe County Administration Centre, Midhurst, Ontario, Canada or by e-mailing the Chief Librarian at library@simcoe.ca
