Press Release

County of Simcoe provides boost to Simcoe County Hospice Alliance as part of a three-year funding commitment

Midhurst/July 11, 2019 – Today, the County of Simcoe provided a $500,000 boost to support area hospices and increase residential hospice services by expanding access to compassionate end-of-life care in home-like environments throughout the region.

These funds are part of the County's three-year $1.5 million commitment between 2017 and 2019, to create greater access to residential hospice care.

The event also kicked off Matthews House Hospice's one-year anniversary, which was made possible in part due to the County's funding contributions.

This year's allocation of $500,000 was issued in the following amounts to Alliance partners:

  • Hospice Georgian Triangle - Collingwood     $58,749.77
  • Hospice Huronia – Penetanguishene             $182,50.46
  • Mariposa House Hospice – Orillia                  $200,000.00
  • Matthews House Hospice – Alliston               $58,749.77

The funds are allocated by the Simcoe County Hospice Alliance, which was formed to look at regional planning and to project the capital needs across Simcoe County as a whole. Simcoe County Hospice Alliance is comprised of representatives from all our area hospices: Hospice Georgian Triangle, Hospice Huronia, Mariposa House Hospice, Matthews House Hospice and Hospice Simcoe.

Hospice palliative care aims to relieve suffering and improve the quality of living and dying. Residential hospices provide expert care to patients, families and friends at one of the most vulnerable times in their lives.

QUOTES

“Our County Council is honoured to provide these important additional funds to residential hospice services in Simcoe County. We recognize the demand for palliative care services is growing, and our funding of the Simcoe County Hospice Alliance will help ensure that our most vulnerable residents continue to have access to vital high-quality end-of-life care." - County of Simcoe Warden George Cornell

“Matthews House Hospice and the Simcoe County Hospice Alliance are fortunate to receive support from the County of Simcoe, for capital costs. The construction of 25 new residential hospice beds for the residents living and dying in the County is a wonderful gift. The Hospice Alliance looks forward to continued support by the County of Simcoe for hospice and hospice services in our neighbourhoods and communities." - Chief Executive Officer Kimberly Woodland, Matthews House Hospice
