#GreenBintoWin contest encourages residents to feed your green bin not your garbage

#GreenBintoWin Tour Running June 1-Aug 27 2017

Midhurst/June 5, 2017 – The County of Simcoe wants residents to feed your green bin not your garbage. To encourage greater participation in its green bin program and raise awareness about proper waste disposal techniques, the County launched its #GreenBintoWin contest running June 1 through August 21, 2017. The social media contest offer green bin "feeders" a chance to win prize packs and a grand prize consisting of a weekend for two adults and two children at Fern Resort.

How do you enter?

  1. Simply take a photo showing "How You Feed Your Green Bin"
  2. Post/share it and follow/tag us on Twitter @SimcoeCounty and/or Facebook @CountyofSimcoe
  3. Use the hashtag #GreenBintoWin

In addition to the social media contest, County staff are hitting the road with the #GreenBintoWin tour in neighbourhoods across the County in search of some of the region's best green bin users. A happy green bin is a full green bin and some of the area's most generous "feeders" will receive County merchandise in recognition of their efforts. Staff will also offer friendly tips and advice for residents who may not participate in the green bin program or those who could use guidance to improve their waste disposal habits.

"Our Council sought out a positive avenue to motivate our residents to participate in our organics program while rewarding residents who are already doing a great job," said Warden Gerry Marshall. "Everyone loves contests and prizes and we're hopeful that with some encouragement and education about the program that our participation rates will increase and that more households will take steps to feed their green bin not their garbage."

Did you know that County participation studies indicate that 65 per cent of Simcoe County residents use their green bin, but that 40 per cent of the materials being placed in our garbage should be put in green bins instead? In addition to all food scraps, here are other common items that should be added as snacks for your green bin:

  • Tissues
  • Coffee cups (not lids)
  • Paper materials contaminated with food such as paper plates or used pizza boxes
  • Paper towels/napkins
  • Wax paper
  • Small wooden items contaminated with food such as stir sticks
  • Plants

There are many benefits to using the green bin organics program:

  • Separation of materials into a green bin helps save landfill capacity for other materials which cannot be recycled or composted
  • Processing organics produces valuable compost or fertilizer
  • Keeping organics out of garbage reduces harmful greenhouse gas production in our landfills
  • Diverting organics through the green bin program helps protect our groundwater resources
