How to Use Your Green Bin!

Step 1: Put your mini bin on the counter or under your sink to keep it handy. Remove unacceptable packaging and wrap food scraps (see acceptable materials on left) in newspaper or in certified compostable bags before placing in your mini bin to help reduce odours and pests and to keep material from sticking in the bin (see diagram below).

Step 2: Every few days, empty the contents of your mini bin into your green bin.

Step 3: Store your green bin where you normally keep your garbage; in your garage, on your porch, or beside your house.

Step 4: Place your securely latched green bin beside your garage at the curb by 7:00am on your regular collection day. Organic material will be collected weekly on your regular collection day and in most cases, will be collected in the same truck but in a separate compartment from the garbage.

Don't know where things go?
Please visit the WASTE WIZARD TOOL, type the item and just like magic, the wizard will tell you which bin it goes in.

Tips to Reduce Odours & Pests:

green bin hanging on fence
  • Keep green bin tightly closed at all times
  • Wrap organics in layers in newspaper or try keeping materials in a sealed container in the fridge or freezer until collection day
  • Use certified compostable bags & tie tightly
  • Wash your mini bin regularly
  • Place green bin out every week at 7am rather than the night before
  • If storing your green bin outdoors, try hanging it on a hook out of reach of animals - without leverage, raccoons cannot open the latch
  • Keep rural garbage boxes in good repair and remove bees and hornets nests
  • If you are still having problems with animals, please contact Customer Service
