In 1899, 42 males and 6 females resided at the Home, the oldest being 100 years old and the youngest 7 years old. A 47 bed care wing and staff accommodations were added to the original building in 1952 and the name was changed to Simcoe Manor Home for the Aged.

For many years the home operated a 250 acre farm. The farm was sold in 1965 leaving the home on 8 acres of land.

In 1973, the original House of Refuge was demolished. The new three level addition which replaced it provided expanded public areas, a swimming pool and semi-private rooms with adjoining washrooms. Accommodation was provided for 158 residents.

In April 1992, a major redevelopment of Simcoe Manor was initiated. The project involved a total renovation of the Home to provide primarily private rooms with ensuite washrooms, a special care unit for the cognitively impaired and a 100 percent barrier free environment. The renovated Home accommodates 126 residents and the new "Simcoe Village" consists of 32 self contained supportive living apartment units. Official Opening Ceremonies were held June 11, 1994.

The programs and services of the Manor are regulated by the Residential Services Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Health. The Manor is "accredited" by Accreditation Canada and is a full member of the Ontario Association of Non-Profit Homes and Services for Seniors.

Simcoe Village has been built to provide accommodation and support services for those people who are having difficulty living in their current place of residence but who do not need the full services of a Home for the Aged. Potential clients will be those who require supervision or assistance with the tasks of daily living due to decreased physical and/or mental capabilities. Support services will be provided on an as-needed basis to enhance the ability of those in the apartments to age-in-place while maintaining independent life-styles.

The Good Neighbour Concept: It is the hope of the administration that every client coming into the Village will help to create a sense of community by showing an interest in the well-being of their fellow apartment dwellers. With assistance from each other, the support staff and the administration, we can provide a pleasant and safe place in which to live.

Involvement of Families and Friends:
The Province of Ontario is committed to keeping people in their own homes as long as possible by increasing the number of caregivers available for in-home care. This philosophy will be carried on in Simcoe Village with in-home services being arranged for on an as-needed basis similar to what might be provided in your current residence. The success of the Village program depends, in part, upon continuing support from your family and friends. The administration looks forward to meeting with them and having them play an important role in your life here at Simcoe Village.

Monthly Rate:
Simcoe Village has twenty-nine one-bedroom apartments and three two-bedroom apartments. Everyone who is admitted into the apartments must pay rent and a preset service charge on a monthly basis. Monthly rates will be reviewed annually. Subsidies are available based on personal income.

Preset services include a service coordinator responsible for:

monitoring the well-being of each client

consulting with the client to arrange support services as deemed necessary

coordinating activities including shopping and banking

emergency response system in each apartment

three hot evening meals each week served in the dining room of the Village

one annual cleaning of your apartment

on-site tub room and walk-in shower; each apartment has a bathtub equipped with handrails

on-site coin-operated laundry facilities

organized social programs and local transportation; access to a beauty salon/barber, chapel & entertainment

mail delivery

Support Services:
One important feature of our new housing venture is the method by which you will receive services. It is the coordinator's responsibility to monitor your care needs and, with your approval, to make the appropriate arrangements for a homemaker to be scheduled into your apartment as required. The homemaker's tasks can include personal care, light housekeeping, assisted meal preparation, laundry, medication supervision and shopping assistance.

It is important to note that twenty-four (24) hour care is not available nor are homemakers available to drop in at any time. They will be scheduled throughout the building during their shift and are not on-call except in emergency situations.

Currently, we have homemakers in the Village every morning and at times in the evenings but not overnight. However, homemaker scheduling change as demand dictates.

Admission Criteria:
Simcoe Village has been designed and funded as an alternative to a long term care facility. Clients considered for admission will be those requiring supervision and/or assistance with activities of daily living due to decreased physical and/or mental capabilities. The provision of the appropriate support services on an as-needed basis should enhance the ability of these clients to age-in-place while maintaining independent lifestyles. The following specific criteria will apply:

Clients must be able to manage/direct their own care.

Clients must be ambulatory and/or independently mobile and able to transfer by themselves.

Clients must be independent with bowel and bladder care.

Clients must be able to feed themselves and to participate in activities of daily living.

Clients must be able to have their needs met by visiting professionals.
