Midhurst/ February 13, 2015 – Championship curlers Glenn Howard and Sherry Middaugh joined Warden Gerry Marshall at the Warden's Fundspiel yesterday to raise important funds for seniors' services in Simcoe County.

Eighteen teams participated in the Fundspiel, held at the Penetanguishene Curling Club, raising more than $12,000 to support the County of Simcoe's Georgian Village Fundraising Campaign. Proceeds will be used to help complete major projects at Georgian Village, including the Village Woodworking area, Georgian Blooms Greenhouse, and a Therapeutic Pool—which will be part of the new Fitness Centre that opened in late 2014 as a direct result of funds raised by the campaign.

"I want to thank our sponsors, participants, member municipalities, Glenn Howard and Sherry Middaugh for supporting our fundraising efforts," said Warden Gerry Marshall. "It was a fun day of curling for everyone involved and the monies raised will directly impact residents living in Georgian Village and our surrounding communities. With the support of all our generous partners, we are getting closer to achieving our total fundraising goal of $807,000 to support community-based projects at Georgian Village."

Georgian Village opened in 2013 and is a state-of-the-art seniors lifestyle community situated in the Town of Penetanguishene. With a focus on aging-in-place, Georgian Village campus offers a continuum of housing options that will help seniors find the kind of care they need for whatever stage of life they are in. In 2014, the County of Simcoe received the prestigious Peter J. Marshall Award from the Association of Municipalities Ontario (AMO) for the Georgian Village Redevelopment project. The Peter J. Marshall Award recognizes those municipal governments demonstrating excellence in the use of innovative approaches to improve capital and/or operating efficiency, and to generate effectiveness through alternative service delivery initiatives and partnerships.

As part of the fundraising efforts, the Georgian Village Fundraising Committee held a Municipal Challenge for County of Simcoe member municipalities. Of the municipalities that entered the challenge, the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury captured first place.

Including proceeds raised through the Warden's Fundspiel, the Georgian Village Fundraising Campaign has now raised more than $612,000 in committed funds.

The County of Simcoe is composed of sixteen member municipalities and provides crucial public services to County residents in addition to providing paramedic and social services to the separated cities of Barrie and Orillia. Visit our website at simcoe.ca.
