As we approach the mid-point of winter, it appears the snow has finally found its way to Simcoe County, making our region a true winter wonderland.

With as many as 10,000 residents working in tourism-related businesses, and an estimated seven million tourists visiting Simcoe County annually, we all benefit from the winter playground that we see outside.

I would encourage each of you to visit the revitalized Tourism Simcoe County website experience.simcoe.ca to learn more about the County’s winter activities and links to local ski conditions, trail system information and a listing of current events.

Anglers flock to the County to enjoy the challenge of ice-fishing. I encourage all to take caution before venturing onto our many lakes and rivers.  For safe ice conditions, please speak to one of the many fish hut operators.

On Monday, February 20, the Simcoe County Museum presents Family Day. There will be snowshoeing and orienteering races and “sliding through the ages” on toboggans and sleds old and new, unique and strange. The Museum is open throughout the winter with many fun activities available, both inside and out.

For something a little different this year try a dog sledding adventure at one of the locations in the County. There are also horse-drawn sleigh rides in communities such as Phelpston, Shanty Bay and Minesing.

The forests of the County offer hundreds of kilometres of excellent trails for cross country ski trips, snowshoeing outings and, in some areas, snowmobiling.
Whether you call them carnivals, winterfests, or frosty frolics, the fun is guaranteed to chase away the mid-winter blues at various locations, including Midland February 5-7, Tay Township February 10-12, Penetanguishene February 17-19, Essa Township February 21, Innisfil February 24-25 and Wasaga Beach’s Snowman Mania February 17-20.  For local information, visit your municipal website.

As the season comes to an end, the Ontario Winter Games will be held in Collingwood March 8-11, a competition sure to attract thousands of spectators and athletes.
I encourage everyone to get out and enjoy the wonder of winter in Simcoe County.
